I'm with you! If I could get back the amount of time I spent thumbing through my closet, trying on dresses I know I won't like, or even worse, spending money on dresses that inevitably left me wanting to crawl in a hole.... Figuring out what to wear for your session can be the most stressful part. And if dresses aren't your usual thing, this just adds to the self-inflicted pressure.
I know picking out the perfect dress can be a little daunting, enter me! I always recommend to my female clients to wear a dress for their session because they are timeless, can be so flattering, and bring a sense of delicateness to the photos.
But where do I even start?
Before going on your hunt for the perfect dress for your session, remember these things:
- Go with something neutral
- Midi or maxi for length
- Something flowly and not a material that has a tendency to cling to your skin
- Don't let the maternity label scare you! If something is labeled as maternity, and you are not in a "maternity" label phase of life, who cares! I have a handful of "maternity" dresses that I wear while not pregnant and you can't tell the difference. It usually just means it's a little extra flowy or has some more give to the material.
- Play with textures!
- You're not alone, everyone has body insecurities. Choose a style of dress that conceals your insecurities and accentuates the features your proud of!
- Mom's get first pick! When planning your family's outfits, always start with mom and then build your family's outfits around it. Play with textures, patterns, and muted colors.
- Last, but certainly not least, take a deep breath mama! Have confidence knowing I'll position you poses that are flattering to your body, and remember this... when you receive your photos, you won't even notice what dress your wearing, but the windy smiles and precious memories we've captured together.
Still need some help?
I got you! I've rounded up some of my favorite dresses for sessions (usually used for family or maternity...engagement sessions can tend to be in their own ballgame). And too, these dresses are great recycle options for upcoming baby or bridal showers, brunch with the girls, vacation, or even a wedding! I do own some of these myself and can attest to their greatness!
**Disclaimer: Some dresses may be out of stock by now, so I will try to do my best to update this blog post to be relevant to the season!
